Do you think Samoan fa'alavelaves are too much?
Ever since I was a child, I was taken to family fa'alavelaves; then, I could not understand anything that went on at these fa'alavelaves. But now that I am older, I understand what is going on, and yes, I do feel that Samoan fa'alavelaves are too much. Yes, it is okay to help out other family members in times of need, but only to a certain extent.
The head of the families, which are the matais, sometimes solicit too much from these families who, aside from meeting the matai's needs, also have children to be fed and bills to be paid. Some people do not have as much money, so when the matai asks for much, these families have to go out of their way just to satisfy the matai. Family members should not, in my own opinion, be troubled with having to gather all the ie toga and money that the matai asks of them. As I said before, yes, we should help out other family members, but to a certain extent.
When I interviewed my sister, she said that nowadays, it also seems like a competition. I agree with her completely...
