INTRODUCTION
In Freudian theory, the id, ego and superego are the basis of an individual's actions. However, the ego, which is based on the reality principle, is hardest hit by society. The ego is constantly being presented with numerous conflicting demands. Sometimes these demands may threaten the organism, or make a person feel overwhelmed. Sometimes, one may feel overly stressed or troubled about life. This feeling is anxiety. Some people are able to cope normally through relaxation techniques, like breathing, exercise, or enjoying a hobby. However, if normal coping strategies do not work, the ego takes over and develops one or more defense mechanisms.
Defense mechanisms are mental and behavioral processes used by an individual to avoid psychological discomfort. They are attempts to protect ones "ego" or core self-esteem from anything that might devalue it...
