Specific Purpose: To Inform My Audience what an Advance Directive is and why it is important.
Central Idea: It is important to know that even if you become unable to communicate you may still be able to make decisions about your healthcare in the form of a legal document know as an Advance Directive. The public should be aware of what an Advance directive is, the 3 different types of Advance directives and how to one.
A 49-Year-old woman is admitted to the hospital for what was to be a routine operation. The surgery was to relieve a blocked artery in her left leg, which was creating a great deal of pain interfering with her ability to walk. On the morning of the surgery, she arrives at the hospital confident that she would soon be cured and could return to her normal active lifestyle free of pain. The surgery begins and everything seemed to be going well at first until the doctors ran into a complication. The doctors then go into the waiting room and spoke to her family. The family made a decision, which would affect the patient for the rest of her life. After the surgery was completed the patient was taken to the ICU to recover...
