Socrates is one of the most well known Greek philosophers of all time. He lived in Athens during the 5th century b.c. and served as a hoplite in the Peloponnesian War and also in the Athenian battles against the Melians. Along with being recognized for his heroism, he was also considered a family man and was happily married to Xanthippe with whom he had a few children. His ideas and his teachings of philosophy, however, are what he is known best for. Socrates never took any money for his teachings, as other people did, but was willing to talk to anybody and everybody about anything and everything. He believed that philosophy was the search for wisdom and pure knowledge and the best way to go about this was through discussions. This is why we have nothing that was written by Socrates himself. Everything that we know about him and his beliefs are recounted to us through other philosophers such as Plato who happened to be one of Socrates' students...
