TragedyLossSorrow. James Hurst shows a wonderful display of these emotions to create the mood in "The Scarlet Ibis". He describes how harsh life is on those who are less fortunate and different from others in this world. The mood is what influences the reader's feeling about the story itself. Hurst uses foreshadowing, diction and symbolism to create a connection between the story and its reader.
At the very beginning of the story, Hurst creates the mood of the story by foreshadowing death. He describes the setting of the story by using terms like "summer was dead" (pg. 344) and describes the scenery as "the last graveyard flowers were blooming and their smell drifted across the cotton field and through every room of our house, speaking softly the names of our dead" (pg. 344). By describing the setting in such a way, the reader knows that sometime during the story there's going to be a loss and it enhances their interest in the story because they're curious...
