Ethnic Stratification
Why does this happen?
There are many ways in which our society is stratified. Whether it is gender, age, income, education, there are many reasons why there is stratification. Ethnic stratification is especially high in the United States, compared to other countries such as Mexico or Brazil (Bonacich 555). Why is this? Many would think that a country as diverse as the United States, where "everyman is created equal," would not have such a high rate of ethnic stratification. There is stratification due to ignorance and resistance to anything that is slightly different in the United States.
Part of the reason there is such a high rate of ethnic stratification is due to the reliance on the market and industry, and the high significance of money on social stratification. All businesses are out to make as much profit as they can. How else to do this but pay your workers as little as possible so your profit margin increases...
