In Ibsen’s play “A Doll’s House” Nora and Helmer play roles that ultimately create the illusion that the house is occupied by perfect Victorian “dolls”. Whether the gender role is forced upon or embraced by the character in question, it still remains that each character must yield to their role in order to satisfy the expectations of society and to maintain “A Doll’s House”. ... In the end the gender role that Nora was forced to play and that Helmer was attempting to play were artificial and helped to create the illusion that the occupants, just as the house, were perfect.
