The climax of a book or movie always puts the audience on the edge of their seat. To create a more successful climax, a writer may use a twist or an unexpected ending in their story. Another method of molding the climax is to keep the plot compelling and attention-grabbing. In some cases, writers will use words that have double meanings to fool the reader into expecting one thing, but getting another. The word 'lottery' usually has positive associations with money, riches, and wealth. However, in the short story, "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson, she provokes an alternative connotation. In this lottery it is not what they win, but what is lost. She uses different writing techniques to shape and effectively set the tone for her surprise ending in the story.
