The Sign of Immanuel
In Isaiah, chapter 7, verse 1-17, Isaiah prophecies an awesome event to King Ahaz to strengthen his faith. This event is called the sign of Immanuel. In this chapter, Isaiah begins by explaining the setting or events that lead to the prophesy. He then describes the prophecy itself to King Ahaz. As scholars have learned more and more about the prophecy, they have come to two possible interpretations.
During this time of prophesy, King Ahaz ruled over Judah. Judah was under Assyrian threat, as were Israel and Aram. Israel and Aram united and tried to convince Judah to join them; however, their coercion resulted in war, the Syro-Ephraimite war. It is at this time the Lord instructs Isaiah to take his son, Shear-Jashub, and visit King Ahab. The significance of taking Isaiah's son with him lies in the meaning of his name...
