In1992, President George Bush said to the National Association of Religious Broadcasters, "We need a nation closer to the Waltons than the Simpsons." He was dead wrong. Since the first episode aired in 1989, The Simpsons has become a national phenomenon. The show has satirized issues from bootlegging to rickets. On The Simpsons nothing is sacred, not even the scared. While many of the show's contemporaries have shied away from the subject of religion, The Simpsons has embraced it. The show offers hilarious criticisms of religion, as well as incredible insights.
