Gay Adoptions should be Legalized
There has been ongoing controversy for the past few years concerning the morality of legalizing gay adoption. So far, some states have legalized gay persons or couples to adopt children, but many have not. I think that gay adoptions should be legalized and socially accepted because gay people have to meet the same qualifications as heterosexuals in order to adopt, there is a growing number of children in foster care, and so far there is no proof of harm to children adopted by homosexuals.
Gay people who wish to adopt have to go through the same process and meet the same requirements as anyone else does. The procedure includes filing an adoption petition with the appropriate state court, which reviews the evidence including a home study of the person or couple. The court's main determinant in deciding whether to grant a particular petition for adoption is in the "best interests" of the child. Due to the subjectivity of the "best interest standard", judges have an immense amount of discretion in their decision making. The sexual orientation of the prospective adoptive parents should not prevent the judge from determining whether or not they are fit to be parents. Other factors, such as stability, health, relationship, and environment should be the major considerations.
