Bipolar Disorder
Life is full of many ups and downs and most individuals develop appropriate responses to these changes in their life. "Some people, however, experience emotional extremes in mood that seem divorced from external events or are unusually prolonged or profound" (Greene 264). Mood disorders are disturbances in mood that are severe or prolonged to the point that they impair ones ability to function (Greene 264). "The two major mood disorders are major depressive disorder and bipolar I disorder" (Kaplan 525). "Patients with both manic and depressive episodes and patients with manic episodes alone are said to have bipolar I disorder"(Kaplan 525). "Major depressive disorder and bipolar I disorder are often referred to as affective disorder, but the critical pathology in these disorders is on of mood, the sustained internal emotional state of a person, and not one of affect, the external expression of present emotional content" (Kaplan 525). Living with a chronic disorder can be one of life's most difficult challenges (Long 7). "It can affect so many aspects of our lives impairing the basic activities of daily living, compromising the pursuit of education and gainful employment, limiting social interaction, and seriously degrading the quality of life" (Long 7).
