There are many steps involved that the Supreme Court must take before finally reaching a decision. First, the case must be under the Supreme Court's jurisdiction. If it is, the party can then send in a petition to have their case heard. Most cases do not go further than this point. Only a selected few are heard out of thousands each year. If they do not decide to hear to case, the lower court's ruling stands. But if the Court agrees to hear a it, the briefs are then submitted to the Court telling their side of the story. After which, a date for an oral hearing is set. At least six members of the Court must be present to hear to information presented. After the hearing is over, the Justices, and only the Justices, sit in a room and discuss what they heard...
