HEART BYPASS SURGERY
If you have CAD, coronary artery disease, you may be faced with the possibility of having surgery. You will be glad to hear that coronary bypass surgery is very safe and becoming even more so as medical research continues to improve on what already works great. At times the arteries of the heart can develop clots or blockages that stop the blood supply to the muscle of the heart. Heart bypass surgery is used to correct these blockages. The blockages are not removed but grafted over or what is called jumped.
At this time, there are two ways to perform this procedure. One is called on pump while the other is called off pump. Traditional procedures use what is called a cardiopulmonary bypass machine, or on pump, and stops the heart from beating. The off pump procedure does not use this machine, and leaves the heart beating during the surgery.
