"Stan" by Eminem is a fantastic song in which the lyrics tell a story about the relationship between "Slim", a huge pop star, and a dejected and over obsessed fan, "Stan". The song is very well written, it samples Dido's chilling "Thankyou", a song about depression. With the powerful rapping and heavy bass line it creates a haunting atmosphere when you listen to it. The informal letter style of the lyrics cleverly makes the listener feel it is talking directly to them.
The first letter is written by Stan, who feels he has a relationship with Slim. Whereas to Slim he is just another fan and they have little in common. Stan tries to point out how alike they really are and to compare their lives and families. As the song progresses, you start to think that Stan must have mental problems, possibly as a result of the drugs he mentions.
It seems as though Stan is in love with Slim, which seems an unusual thing for Eminem to write into the song because of all the accusations that Eminem is against homosexuality. Stan says that he has Slim's name tattooed on his chest...
