The first chapter of the Tale of Genji and "The Song of Everlasting Sorrow" have many aspects in common, beginning with the relationship between the Emperor and his mistress. In the past, we read articles about authors who say that everyone must live life to the fullest, and accept the pain that comes with the joy. On the other hand, we read the Buddhist view that life is suffering. We must be detached from all other things to reach nirvana, where there is no suffering. The two pieces of literature follow the latter of the two views on life because both relationships, the Emperor with Yang Kwei Fei and the Emperor and his mistress, end in suffering.
The first paragraph in Tale of Genji directly mirrors "The Song of Everlasting Sorrow" because it describes a relationship which is already doomed to fail. We then learn how all others despised the mistress because of her relationship with the Emperor. There is even a footnote about Emperor Xuanzong's infatuation with Yang Kwei Fei because it is the same scenario as the Emperor and his mistress. The people's continuous dislike of her and his unwillingness to let her leave his side eventually caused her to waste away.
In the same way, the people's dislike for Yang Kwei Fei also caused her death...
