Asses the new labelling and other processes within schools are what determines who succeeds and who fails in education.
Although labelling is known to be a small part of a teacher's observation, it can have great effects on a pupil's performance.
A middle class pupil is more likely to fit the 'ideal pupil' judgement by a teacher than a working class student. A middle class pupil wants to learn and therefore is quite keen to work.
The idea of labelling gives a big insight into the power of teachers to influence the behaviour and the academic performance of students, and therefore this has a major impact on the attainment of different groups of students. Labelling is believed to be detrimental to self esteem and self-concept.
For example, a pupil maybe labelled in the classroom to be stupid and slow by the teacher. Now that the pupil has a label with him/her, this may affect them. Either the pupil will keep the label and therefore won't do well at school and maybe not even go on to any education. Or the pupil will show that what the teacher has said is wrong, and they are not slow or stupid and show that they can do the work and go on to higher education...
