While studying child development many theory have arose in response to the age-old controversy of nature versus nurture. Are genetic factors or environmental factors more important? When referring to nature, we are referring to hereditary or inborn givens that which we receive from our parents. When referring to nurture, it describes the forces from the world around us that affects our development. The nature-nurture controversy helps answer questions like if a child is excelling mathematically for his age was that a result of parental tutoring, or inborn biology?
John Locke, a philosopher, said that nurture was more important that nature. He believed children where born tabula rasa, which is a blank slate. He believed children are passive and do little to influence their own destiny. According to Locke, parents are tutors for the child who can mold them in anyway they want.
