The Cycles and Effects of Depression
There comes a time in everyone's life when a little rain must fall and it is perfectly natural to feel depressed every now and then. Without emotion, man would be nothing but a biological computer. Says Arnold M. Ludwig, a professor of psychiatry at the University of Kentucky: "Love, joy, anger, satisfaction, and discontent provide
the meaning of human existence."
The upsetting and stressful events in life teach us to appreciate the good times while we have them. Many people are able to cope with difficult situations without giving up hope for the future. "There's a kind of freedom in being completely screwed, because you know things can't possibly get any worse," stated Matthew Broderick, in the 1990 film, The Freshman. Although Broderick's statement seems cynical it is actually a healthy outlook in the face of extreme distress. In saying that "things can't possibly get any worse" he implies that things can only get better in the future. Unfortunately, some people loose their ability to maintain such a healthy perspective and become depressed...
