The author’s clever use of the first person narrative gives Rachel her own voice and allows the reader to experience her feelings and actions. Repeated use of simile and metaphor, childlike imagery and exaggerated syntax, are used by the author to describe how Rachel thinks and feels about herself. The author’s choice of diction reveals Rachel’s immaturity. As she whines these words “Not mine, not mine, not mine”, to her teacher, and says “… Some days you might need to sit on your mommas lap because you’re scared.” Rachel doesn’t want this ugly old sweater that her teacher is making her claim as hers. She just wants to enjoy her birthday because she is turning 11 and it’s a very special day to her.
