There are many cons against the new Hybrid Automobiles GM and other manufactors are going to produce in the next few years. Generally hybrids cost $3000 to $6000 over their gas counterparts. Even though you gain fuel economy, it may take you many years to recoup the inital investment cost. According to Bradford, "Consumer Reports compared the 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid model, which gets 36 miles per gallon and sells for roughly $21,000, with the 2003 Honda Civic EX, which gets 29 miles per gallon and sells for an average of $18,500. It would take you 21 years in gas savings to pay back the extra money you initially laid out for the hybrid. (Bradford, 2003). This is quite a hefty price tag to gain gas milage. Most customers are not aware of how little they will save at the pump
There is the matter depreciation due to technology change. Hybrids may depreciate faster then their gas counter parts, due to technology changes in upcoming models and improvements in drive lines and batteries.
