Ana Puckett Mrs. Scott Eng. 1301 9:35-10:55 14 September 2004 An Observation of Parenthood Why do parents act the way they do? Why do some parents say no to a certain question while other parents say yes? A parent that says no most of the time usually confirms their answer with, “Because I said so.” They say this so the child will understand that the parent is in control. A parent that says yes most of the time usually either does not care or feels that they should not control their children especially in the teens. Unfortunately, children sometimes only remember the bad things about their parents like arguments and punishments. I know when my parents made me angry I would always tell myself that I would never treat my kids like that. Truthfully, now when I look back at it, my mother could not have been a better parent and role model to me. Every parent or set of parents has their own way of teaching. The way a parent functions usually depends on the way they were raised and predicts that parent’s rules, punishment ideas, and ways of communication. Parents can be categorized into four different groups such as strict parents, lenient parents, extremely strict parents, and extremely lenient parents. Dividing parents into different categories and explaining why they do what they do can help children understand and help them see what qualities they want to change when they have their own children. Parents who are branded as “strict” get the name because they have certain guidelines for their children that are enforced thoroughly. For instance, my dad is thought to be strict because he set my curfew at eleven o’clock when I was younger. If curfew was broken, then I would get grounded or get a privilege taken away such as talking on the telephone.
