Introduction
What is Voice over IP (VoIP)? VoIP is the transmission of voice signal on existing physical cabling that a company sends network data. VoIP is an emerging technology that has been around for a few years and is already being implemented by local telephone companies, as the technology becomes more stable it is more readily accepted by companies. Digital phone technology is the basic principle behind VoIP. Converting the human voice from analog or sine wave to digital, transmitting it and then converting it back to analog again is the concept we are dealing with. The digital signal consists of binary one's and zeros; the transmission takes place over the mostly SONET or fiber optic phone network. VoIP is attractive to corporations today because of the availability of high speed data networks and lower operating costs. This helps reduce latency or lag, which is the main cause of jitter and dropped calls. These were major drawbacks to the earlier VoIP implementations.
