Until the renaissance, the primary world view people shared was a geocentric one, which states at the center of all things is the earth. This view is significant because in saying that all things revolve around the earth it can be said that all things are revolving around human beings. This was important because it affirmed Christian notions that God created the universe and that we are his most loved creation.
Copernicus is credited with promoting a heliocentric world view. Employing his love of astronomy he observed that contrary to popular opinion, the earth orbited around the sun.
Nicolaus Copernicus was born Nicolaus Koppernigk. When he was a student he began to use the Latin form of his name. Born in Poland in 1473 Copernicus studied math and optics at Crawcow University as a young man. In 1496 he moved to Bologna in Italy to study Canon law.
After 3 years of study he took a clerical position at the cathedral of Frauenburg where he spent the rest of his days in studying in peace...
