Flooding is mainly caused by excess river water and the silting of the river channel. Therefore, in order to prevent floods, it is important for us to regulate river flow and prevent the silting of rivers.
Regulating the river flow
1. Building dams and sluices
Building dams and sluices is a traditional way of controlling flooding. There are already more than 50,000 dams along the Chang Jiang, holding back more than 1,350 billion cubic metres of water. The multipurpose Sanxia Dam is also under construction.
2. Central management system
As the Chang Jiang passes through many provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions, dams are managed by different local governments. A central management system will help organize and coordinate flood control policies.
