Mel Brooks' parody to the 1930s movies of Frankenstein was done with skill and hilarity. Brooks slightly refers to Mary Shelley's story and James Whale's film, yet the purpose of Brooks film is not to reveal a serious moral, it is to amuse. His movie, Young Frankenstein, can actually be classified as a low comedy, characterized by slapstick and burlesque. This film will entertain children while amusing adults also, it is a film for all ages.
One key element in comedy is humor in physical pain or physical appearance, which children usually seem to enjoy. Brooks' film immediately kicks off with this first ingredient. The technique Frankenstein uses to demonstrate to a class the difference between involuntary and voluntary reflexes, involves kneeing another man in the groin. Shortly after, Frankenstein stabs himself in the leg with a scalpel when he becomes angry. As the film continues, the physical humor persists. Frankenstein's creation meets a blind man who want to share a cigar with him...
