The Valley Forge Winter: Civilians and Soldiers
Title: The Valley Forge Winter: Civilians and Soldiers
Author: Wayne Bodle
Publisher and Date: Pennsylvania State University Press, November 1st, 2002
Pages: 352
Purpose:
Wayne Bodle felt that in this book he needed to clarify a lot of things that was said, and was not said about the winter in Valley Forge. In 1977, Bodle began his studying of Valley Forge for the National Park Service to insure the exact details of the winter in Valley Forge. He did this so the National Park Service would be correct when they developed programs to go along with the park. There was always discussion on why Valley Forge was receiving so much more attention than Morristown, New Jersey, another winter suffering site of the Continental Army. Although Bodle had some trouble answering this, it is pretty evident towards the end of the book why. Another reason he wrote this was to tell the story of the winter at Valley Forge on a more personal level, compared to previous information. He did this by citing quotes from generals, soldiers, and even Washington himself. Bodle also gave the perspectives of women, children, merchants, etc.
