Teens today have many problems to overcome. There
are many factors that determine whether they will live
a happy, healthy life, or a sad, depressed one. These
factors have grown substantially in the past 40 years.
Now, more than ever, teens are being affected by
depression.
Depression has long been a factor in human society,
though not as wide-spread as it is today. For many
years scientists have been trying to figure out the
causes. Aristotle called it "black bile", and it has
also been called "the common cold of mental illness
and, like the cold, it's difficult to quantify."
(Arbetter I) To make matters worse, people who were
depressed were often told it was a phase and they
would snap out of it. According to the National
Institute of Mental Health, half of all Americans
still consider depression a sign of weakness or a
character flaw.
