What is intelligence? What does being considered intelligent mean? Most people have an instinctive idea of what intelligence is, and many words in the English language distinguish between different levels of intellectual skill: for example, bright, dull smart, stupid, clever, slow, and so on. The dictionary definition of intelligence is: The capacity to acquire and apply knowledge. But yet, no universally accepted definition of intelligence exists, and people continue to debate what, exactly, intelligence is. After reading some of the sections from the Critical Strategies for Academic Thinking and Writing book, my understanding of what intelligence means has actually diminished. I can no longer define intelligence as "someone who is considered smart." My definition of intelligence has now expanded into an infinite cycle of interpretations. I now see intelligence as a word with no exact definition, and one which is based on a person's personal opinion and their education of the word in their culture.
So, can a person be described as "intelligent" if they are a straight 'A' student and receive the highest SAT score?..
