The condition of a certain race and culture is a difficult idea to portray to those outside of that race. The Hispanic Condition is a new idea for me and through the contemporary literature we have read throughout this class I think I have a better understanding of it. The Hispanic Condition seems to be a label that I view as unnecessary in today's society. The struggles of the characters in the contemporary Hispanic/Latino literature we have read are not much different than the struggles of Americans I have been witness to in literature and other forms of expression. If the Hispanic Condition is seen as something different from the American condition, then it causes people to see differences when there does not need to be. I believe that this placement of a certain "condition" for different races stems a form of racism.
I was first concerned with this topic after watching a filmed interview with Toni Morrison. This interview, "Toni Morrison Uncensored," covered several topics about race and Morrison's views being an African American woman and her feelings on race relations. In this interview, Morrison says that we will remain racists because we do not know how to live any other way; we are scared of any other way of life. The idea of a "Minority Writers" class dedicated to a genre labeled by the authors' race seemed to be a way of perpetuating this idea of separation and racism...
