English 178: Poetry: Essay on the comparison of two religious poems.
John Milton: On his blindness
TS Elliot: Journey of the magi
I chose these two particular poems in order to be able to convey the deeper meanings of the two poems and thereby being able to see what both the poets motivations for writing the specific poems were. Both start out very vaguely, not yet specifying what the theme of the poem is, it is only in the end that one realize what is being dealt with. Both struggle with a question on or about religion and we find that they answer these questions themselves at the very end of each poem.
John Milton is a world renowned poet who went blind later in his years, therefor this poem is about him and his lack of sight. He begins by saying: "When I consider how my light is spent." thereby trying to say how his day's are wasted onaccount of his blindness. Then, skipping a line, he say's: "and that this talent which is death to hide logded with me useless..." telling us that why did God give him this great talent to write, only to make him blind so that he cannot write down his poetry anymore...
