In the book The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper, there are many aspects that we can relate back to folktales and fairytales. By studying these similarities and differences we can identify what type of fantasy novel this book is as well.
As we learned earlier in the semester, a folktale can include stories such as myths, legends, and fables. These stories are society's attempt at resolving hopes and fears, reassuring doubts, and answering questions. There are a huge variety of types of folktales as well. The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper is related to some aspects of folk literature. This book could closely relate to elements of folktales in that it tries to explain an unknown of the world. To us living in the world, evil is something that can sometimes be questioned and wondered about. In this book the dark- or the evil is trying to up rise against the light- or the good. We find out how Susan Cooper depicts good and evil and how they are fought for in the modern day world...
