Shakespeare's "The Tragedy of Othello, The Moor of Venice" is a lesson in human nature. Shakespeare is still popular today because his stories tell us of ageless human emotions such as jealousy and hatred. These emotions are as powerful and destructive today as they were in 1600's Shakespearian England. People are drawn to and fascinated by tragic stories. Jealousy, deception and intrigue are the main elements in the tragedy of "Othello."
Iago's jealousy for Othello begins a disastrous chain of events. Iago is consumed with a deep resentment and jealousy for Othello's station in life. Othello, a Moor, is a higher rank than Iago and is considered a Venetian hero. He also has a beautiful wife, Desdemona. While outwardly Iago shows respect and deference to Othello, secretly Iago seethes with jealousy fueled by racial prejudice...
