Why are naps good for children? Yes, it gives mothers time to do things they don't have the time to do while the baby is awake but there are also other more important factors. Research shows that mental and physical development takes place while children are sleeping. It also shows that the longer a nap a child takes the longer his attention span will be. I have noticed myself when a child is well rested he will be less fussy and that is also proved in research.
It is to be thought that genetics determines if a child takes long or short naps but there is tricks you can use to that will encourage good napping habits such as don't rock a child to sleep, don't let them stay up late and don't wait to long to put them down for a nap. I think these are all good tricks especially not rocking or nursing a child till they fall asleep for a nap because this may make them dependent of it and they'll wake up as soon as you lay them down.
It is okay to break the Childs schedule if for example you're away from home. If your child only takes one nap a day it should be in the early afternoon and you should allow the child to be awake at least four hours after the nap before his bed time to keep his internal clock on schedule.
