Devastation in The Glass Menagerie
This play by Tennessee William's is based around a family and their lack of ability to deal with the realities of life.
Laura feels that she will never amount to anything and is a very shy person due to her disability, retreats into the safety of the family apartment. She is fragile like her glass collection. The only time thru out this play that Laura surfaces from the deep shell around her is when Jim O'Connor, the gentleman caller arrives and after some conversation she is feeling comfortable being around him.
Laura's mother Amanda and her brother Tom also have glass like traits. Amanda continually reflects back to her past when she was a pretty, young girl entertaining as many as seventeen gentleman callers in one day. Amanda's memories are haunting to Laura because Amanda is obsessed with finding a gentleman caller for Laura and Laura fears that she will never live up to her mother's expectations.
Tom is portrayed as the man of the house. He shelters and protects Laura from the world outside. His mother burdens him with the fact that he must feel a responsibility towards his sister...
