SHANE
This is the first time I've seen Shane since I was a kid. I use to watch it over and over as a child and I can remember idolizing Shane just as little Joey did in the film. It brought back so many memories of me loving this film, but now as I watched it as a 22 year old I can't say I found myself enjoying the film in any significant way. Joey really became annoying throughout the picture and I thought the mother could have played a much more significant role. I thought the love interest between her and Shane should have been explored more extensively in the film. You could clearly see a spark between the two, but nothing ever arises from the idea. Who doesn't love a good love triangle? I know I do.
I suppose this is an ideal Western: the outcast riding through town finding an open invitation to work with some good, country people; the outlaws bullying the townsfolk to move off the land; and in the end the noble outcast takes it upon himself to right the wrong with a deadly shootout with the man in the black hat. It's all very appealing, but I found it lacking in substance, especially when compared to Stagecoach...
