Twenty-five to fifty percent of children will experience some form of child abuse in their childhood ("maltreatment" 2). More than three million children were reported being abused last year ("maltreatment" 2). Of those three million, over a thousand children died, with seventy-six percent being under age four ("maltreatment" 2).
Child maltreatment is a general term used to describe all forms of child abuse. Child abuse occurs in children under the age of eighteen by a person responsible for the child's welfare ("maltreatment" 2). The main forms of child abuse are physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional/psychological abuse, and neglect. Physical abuse is non-accidental physical injury as a result of a caretaker's acts ("maltreatment" 2). This includes shaking, slapping, punching, beating, kicking, biting, or burning.
