This chapter explores the cultural identity of a stereotypical Australian culture and follows Lannie Cunneen, the housewife, through the growth in her character and how she challenges her expected role. It introduces the reader to the themes and issues of sense of escape, gender, family life, sport and the important role of females in the household.
