Fred is a prick (don't wrote this in your essay) when he doesn't give the beggar some money he is heartless, selfish and ignorant towards those who are less fortunate than himself "I can't get at my wallet,' he said." (pg 215)
He has personal goals rather than family goals. Shows his lack of commitment to his family. He will let his farm (family goal) suffer in order to achieve his personal goal. Selfish. This also relates as to how Fred regards his family's values. 'For most of the nineteen years Fred had worked in a clerical position at the Red Plains council chambers, allowing the farm to fall apart while he strove for promotion and eventually the position of shire clerk / Goal!'
