Stance on Gay Marriage
At the beginning of this class I did not have a set stance on the issue of gay marriage. The reason for this, I would presume, is that I did not understand that even though I am not a homosexual, the issue still has an affect on the environment around me. The debate over such a personal and wide reaching topic such as gay marriage, as I expected, was very heated and intense. People can easily get carried away with their own ideas and beliefs without stopping to listen to what the other side has to say. This issue is tied up with people's personal identities, not only with who they are as a person, but who they love and how they express that love. I know that, for me at least, it can be very easy to hear the arguments against gay marriage and to just dismiss them as close-minded, bigoted, or hateful. I'd imagine that many other gays and lesbians feel the same way.
However, as I listed to all three sides of the issue and did research on both my assigned stance as well as the others, I found pros and cons to all sides. While listening to the pro-marriage side talk about accepting people and progression I could not help but think if this is the right kind of progression that I want to see in our nation. They set the example of Scandinavia and how they are progressing faster than our country morally...
