Raising children has always been the most important function of the American family. In 1946, a man named Dr. Benjamin Spock wrote a best selling book that changed how many children would be raised, and therefore, helped to change our society. Gone were the days of strict schedules and the old adage that children should be seen and not heard. Now the famous "Trust yourself. You know more than you think you do. (1) Became the mantra for the new generation.
Dr. Spock's, A Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Care, quickly became the primary source of information on how to raise children for many new families, selling more than three quarter of a million copies in its first year of publication. (2) During Spock's long lifetime, the book would go through seven additions, being translated into thirty nine different languages, and would come to sell more than fifty million copies, making it second in sales only to the Bible...
