Intelligence is a highly prized characteristic in our society. However, with brains comes sacrifice. In Fifth Business, by Robertson Davies, Dunstan Ramsay was intelligent all his life. As a child, he was the "know-it-all", and as an adult, he was a sophisticated historian whose interests included travel, teaching, and researching saints. But though Dunny (Dunstan) was an intellectual, he was ignorant in the subject of his roles in life. In times that he didn't realize how influential his being was, he received advice from others like Mrs. Dempster, Blazon, and Liesl, which helped him greatly understand his own life and the role he played in others. Sometimes, the giver of the advice needs to follow it himself. Many people suffer within their superior minds because they cannot decide for themselves what their purpose is.
