Prejudice and Discrimination in the U.S.
Society is often a hostile place, especially if you live in the United States. Our country is composed of a diverse group of people from different ethnic groups, religions, and cultures. Each of these groups has their own subcultures as well, which makes our country one big melting pot (or salad, if you prefer). Although there are many advantages to having a diverse population, there are some negative aspects to it as well, including stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination.
Many people do not understand the differences between stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination, even though they have three separate and distinct definitions. Stereotypes can be defined as portraying every member of a particular group as having the same fixed, and usually unfavorable, characteristics. Stereotypes can be applied to different ethnic groups, religions, gender, and even your social group at school.
