During the mid- nineteenth century continuous hostilities between Mexico and the United States led to the war with Mexico. James Polk, the United States president during that time, was an expansionist who favored war with Mexico. The war began in 1846 and lasted until 1848. Of the several causes of the war, Polk's persistence on expanding the union and Mexico's unstable government were the two main reasons for fighting. The United States sent leaders such as John Slidell and Stephen Kearny to attack Mexico in order to accomplish Polk's ultimate goal of ceding land. The war ended with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in the American's favor. With this war, America's power and prestige overcame the Mexican government.
