The Kwakuitl Indians include Mark Brian among their trusted friends in the novel I Heard the Owl Call My Name by Margaret Craven because they are joyful, respectful and considerate to him. From the time that Mark Brian came to the village of the Kwakuitl Indians, the Indians are cautious around the new vicar but do not show much joy or laughter with him. Then, Mark goes hunting with the Indians and they shoot a bear but Mark cannot see the bullet hole. "This bear did not die of a bullet," one of the Indians told him gravely. "He died of shock. It's the first time he's ever seen a vicar so far up on the mountain." (Craven, 50). In a nice way, the Indians are joking with Mark that he is the first vicar that hunts with them and the bear was shocked. The Indians laugh with Mark because they feel comfortable with him and treat him like he is one of them. There is a joyful feeling among the Indians because Mark is a trusted friend...
