Strategy Demonstration: Sketch to Stretch
Sketch to Stretch is a teaching strategy used to help students summarize their understandings through sketches. It is a representation of personal meanings following the reading and/or listening of particular text.
Sketch to Stretch was originated by Short, Harste and Burke, 1998, and can be adapted for any grade level depending on the book you chose to read.
To begin this strategy it is a good idea to demonstrate the process. Start by explaining and modelling Sketch to Stretch. Following this demonstration, students read and/or listen carefully to a selection. Students are then asked to create a sketch related to the reading. The goal is to create a general image rather than focusing on small details. The use of a timer helps so that students understand this is a moment to quickly collect their thoughts about the story using a "doodle" technique. In addition, instruction to use pencils may help so that the emphasis is on collecting thoughts rather than on artistic competence...
