Literally, “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” by Gabriel Márquez is about a family visited by a mysterious man with wings. The supernatural man represents the unknown. He is very different from the rest of civilization. Though people like to think of themselves as open-minded, the people in this story do not want to believe the man is an angel because they would have to reconsider everything they believe in. ... Surely if we met an old man “[…] dressed like a rag picker.” (472), with “[…] only a few faded hairs left on his bald skull and very few teeth in his mouth […]”(472), with “[…] huge buzzard wings, dirty and half plucked […]”(472) we will wonder. He certainly does not fit the description of our heavenly angels with white soft and feathery wings surrounded by a glow of bright sunlit clouds. Certainly God would not allow his very own angels to go around in rags.
