The struggles the characters of Cold Mountain endure parallel biblical teachings on many levels. Themes of endurance, humility, patience, and desire, fill this novel while exhibiting reference to many biblical passages and scriptures. Inman and Ada are the characters that promote these themes as well as adapt and accept the change required to attain the prize at the end of the journey.
"Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it" (I Corinthians 9:24). The author of the book of Corinthians, Paul, writes a letter to the church of Corinth regarding serious problems in the church. He wrote about running the race, much like that of Inman's race. In the race, Inman is competing against men, nature, and himself. But in order to reach Ada, his prize, he must run with the desire to overcome every obstacle in his way.
