Pavement Management is traditionally the most important and expensive function of a road. However the long term benefits and strategies are typically not quantified. More is known about the initial, relative improvements associated with a given maintenance strategy that is known about its impact on a pavement performance and life. This is one of the main reasons given for not integrating maintenance activities into pavement management systems. This paper discusses procedures used to quantify the improvements with typical maintenance strategies and activities and demonstrates the benefits of utilizing these in pavement management, specifically the tradeoffs between pavement rehabilitation and maintenance.
Pavement maintenance is a very crucial component of any roadway, to maintain their existing network in a state that provides a safe & smooth ride to the road user through the application of various operations. Research has been conducted at CRRI to determine the value of maintenance to encourage road construction agencies to adopt sound maintenance practices (preventive maintenance) and understand the benefits, Individual road construction agencies need to carry this to assess their own maintenance practice.
Various types of maintenance operations are discussed with their own merits in addition to earlier practices along with the proposals for Bangalore roads.
