The appearance of justice can be more important than justice itself. And if this is true why be just at all? Could it be that we are all forced into being just simply because of the laws imposed on us by society or could there be some internal reason for wanting to be fair to our fellow man. Can there really be justice for no external reason and/or without any external force, such as laws? Socrates believes there can and should be an inner desire for justice; not merely a desire satisfy societies requirements for justice.
Before the question of justice can be answered, we must first understand where justice is derived from. Justice comes from morality, and morality comes from ones own desired not suffer. From this desire arose an un-formal agreement between people, more or less stating that if 'you don't injustice me, I won't injustice you.' From this very simple understanding laws were written and sins were created. Since it is profitable for both parties not to suffer injustice this logic still holds true today...
